I have been keeping a pen and paper diary for my learning journal that I will transfer onto here assoon as I have a long period of trime to spend in a cafe or when I arrive home. I did make a note on webct but I will repeat myself here just to let people know. email lists

I have been looking into lists for the past hour or so now. At first I thought I was doing something wrong (if something doesn't go right I always blame myself first, for being totally clueless when it comes to the net), HOWEVER then I realised that email lists are EXTREMELY specific, and there is not really any space for maybe's.

The point I am trying to make is. . . .I first logged onto yahoo main groups page http://au.groups.yahoo.com/ I was not sure what groups I was intending on joining but something caught my eye."roadside fun" - find that unique location and take a road trip. Since my family and I will be travelling around victoria for three weeks as of next week I thought this would be something of interest.

http://au.dir.groups.yahoo.com/dir/Regional/Countries/Australia

After clicking here I clicked Victoria and then however I ended up fairly dissapointed. The groups or lists that come up under that heading were things such as 'Melbourne Lesbian Scene', 'Muslims in Melbourne', 'Americans Living in Melbourne', and finally 'Islamic's studying at University'. While these all may be useful and interesting lists for some people they are certainly not what I expected to find under the road trip for victoria link. I even went back and retraced my steps just in case I did the wrong thing and came up with the same thing.

I then went onto topica lists http://lists.topica.com/channels/travel/ and decided I would try to find the same thing. Clearly this is a US based site and therefore I was not going to have any luck finding Victoria there. I then tried to look for something else I am interested in such as music, and while I am happy for other people to become a member on Britany Spears' fan site, it is not for me.

So far the lists have not been something that I would go to and look for, obviously I have not had much success with lists, but will try again and see if I have any better luck at a later stage.

email tutorial

I have completed the email tutorial and wanted to copy and paste the screen showing the answers, however I am unable to do it for whatever reason. I have attempted to download Jing and it looks like I am half there, however then it comes up saying I need to download something else, and when I attempt to download it the damn thing says it is already there!!!!!! SO, instead of sitting here and screaming at the computer I have decided to just write the answers below.

To check for a new email you must ENTER YOUR PASSWORD

If you don't know what kind of computer or software your recipient has, send a document attachment as a PLAIN TEXT (ASCII) FILE

Flames are RUDE AND PROVACTIVE REMARKS

Module Two - Email Task

1. What information about a user's email, the origin of a message, and the path it took can you glean from an email message?

You can see the who the sender is, who the recipients are other than your self provided they have not been 'bcc', the subject, therefore the content of the email, the time it was sent and received. You can also tell if it is an original message or if it has been forwarded on.

2. In what cases would you find it useful to use the 'cc' , 'bcc' and 'reply all' functions of the email?

'cc' carbon copy
'bcc' blind carbon copy

I personally use 'cc' when I am sending in my call reports and pay information for work. I have the 'to' recipient as the pay office and the 'cc' as my boss who is more interested in the call report other than the pay sheet, but she still needs to view that information.

3. In what ways can you ensure that an attachment you send will be easily opened by the reciever?

Try checking with the recipient first so you know what programs they have and if they will be able to open the intended file. Alternatively keep attachments to simple formats such as Jpeg .doc PDF or rich text format.
You can also ask the recipent to reply and let you know that they were able to open the attachment.

4. What sort of filters or rules do you have set up, and for what purpose?

Currently other than a spam filter I have no other filters or rules set up on my email. I still have some 'junk' mail leak through into my inbox even though my filter is on high, so I would like to look into having this protected further.

5. How have you organised the folder structure of your email and why?

I have all emails come into the inbox and that's where they stay unless I delete them. I don't feel that I have a need to keep seperate folders for emails. I recieve a few work emails, the occasional email from university and then mostly just simple emails from friends. My inbox usually has up to 100 emails in it at a time, I don't delete my emails straight away, so if there is an email that I need to go back to I can if I need to.

Ping vs Traceroute

I have gone back to centralops.net and used the ping tool to compare with the traceroute. I have listed the results below. I am not actually sur if it work correctly because each count has timed out, therefore I can not compare the two. However there were 5 actions, so I am not sure if this means that there were 5 hops.

Here it is. . . . .

Trace Route

Yeahhhhhhhhh, I finally completed a task without having to ask someone a stupid question. . .Don't tell me I am finally learning something new. . .Now that would be AMAZING!!!!!

Anyway on a more sericous note. I used http://centralops.net/co/ and used the tracroute function from there. I typed in curtin.edu.au in the "to" path which then showed the following traceroute, taking 21 hops to curtin.

FTP FIlezilla

Well I have FINALLY completed the FTP task. And while I am glas that I have completed it, I still feel a little deflated. The reason - I have completed the task but not totally aware of what I have done. . . .I probably shouldn't admit this out loud but that's the way it is. I will copy the results beneath to show that I have complete the task.

Also to answer the question "according to the readme file, 'capitalization matters'.

Love/Hate Relationship

How is it that you can both LOVE and HATE computers all at the same time???

Virus!!

I have been having MAJOR computer problems. My computer has some how picked up a virus. I sent it back to the shop, where I purchased it, as it is only 9 months old, they sent it back, and it was still not fixed. I have been trying to use my husbands computer but since it is a work computer there are restrictions on it and I wasn't even able to access webct. I am still struggling with computer access, and over the next few days I will be going between my sister computer, a friends and then my husbands when he is home.

I am soooooooo frustrated, I have fallen behind which I really didn't want to do, as I am so new to all of these things I wanted to stay up to date so that I could keep up with the people that actually know what they are doing!!!!

Anyway onwards and upwards I guess, I will keep soldiering on and hopefully get there eventually.

Fingers crossed my computer is returned and working properly on Monday as promised!!!

This is an attempt to attach the final telnet screen.

I figure that I need proof, after asking all of the stupid questions I am sure that there are some people out there still questioning whether or not I did actually do it. . and rightfully so :p

well for whatever reason it won't attach. I am having to use my husbands work computer as there is a problem with my internet server at the moment. I will attempt to put it on later when I have my computer back on, hopefully it will work then.

telnet

Wooooohoooooooooo, I can't believe that I was finally able to access telnet. I do have to give thanks toHans for the help. There are several things that I am not still not sure about. First of all did it not work because I wasn't putting telnet through the run section, instead accessed it by searching my computer files. Or did it not work because I didn't type the o in front of the library address. . .perhaps both!!!!

Anyway I have finally done it, which is all that matters. . . . Do I like it. . . . .NO WAY!!!!!!!!

My still very limited understanding is that it is kind of like an "olden day" google. And if I had to make a choice of the two, it would be google all the way!!!!!!!!!!

I have never attached anything to a blogg before so I am going to post this message followed by the final screen of the telnet search (as proof). I wan't to make sure that this gets on my blogg in one piece before mucking it up with an attachment.

Its over. . .thank goodness!!!!!!!!!
