www. Standards - writing for the web

Belinda's 5 Important Rules for Writing Online.

1. BE DIRECT - Research suggests that only 16 percent of people read whole pages of text while online so text needs to be precise, direct and to the point. This enables the reader to make sure it is what they are after as well as keeping the readers at your site.

2. CONSISTENT WRITING STYLE - Be consistent in your writing styles, don't change the genre of your style half way through you page. Knowing your reader is also helpful and writing to their style. The writing style on a legal page for barristers would differ to the writing style on a website for downloading the latest music.

3. CREDIBILITY - Use high quality graphics and prints so that your website looks professional, this will make your writing more valid with your readers.

4.LINKS - Make sure that you limit the amount of links on your website. The links should ALWAYS be significant to the reader.

5. HEADINGS - Headings should be easily recognisable in a way that they don't blend in with the text, because most readers only scan web pages, the headings need to be able to grab the readers eye without being to overbearing.
